What is elastin?

Elastin is the primary component responsible for elasticity in our body. We can find it in the extracellular matrix in the skin, tendons, lungs, vascular walls and ligaments. It belongs to the group of non-essential proteins. Elastin is rich in the amino acids glycine, alanine, proline, valine and leucine.

What is elastin needed for in our body?

As its name suggests, elastin has elastic properties that organs need for their functioning so that they can return back to their original state after expansion. Elastin keeps the skin firm, taut and ready to respond to changes, for instance in our weight. If we put on weight, the skin stretches. If we lose weight, the skin returns to its original state thanks to elastin.

The amount of elastin decreases with age

The amount of elastin in our skin gets lower as we age. This decrease is accelerated by frequent exposure to UV rays; smoking also has a huge effect on its loss. During this decrease, wrinkles appear and the skin gets thinner (paper-thin skin). It is said that as of the 25th year of age, each year the amount of elastin drops by approximately 1%, if we don’t smoke and aren’t exposed to too much UV radiation. Otherwise, the amount of elastin decreases at a faster rate.

Can I make up for the loss of elastin in some way?

Yes, by using the Elastin N-Medical food supplement, which contains hydrolysed elastin, regularly.

Skin composition

Elastin is a very important protein whose task is to ensure elasticity. It can be found in the skin, blood vessels, lungs, tendons and other organs. Its function can be seen with the naked eye. Just pull on your skin and let go. Its snapping back quickly is a sign of proper functioning. Unlike in our childhood and youth, as one ages one has less elastin, and therefore it becomes ever harder for the body to maintain its necessary elasticity. Elastin can be supplemented in the form of a beauty drink or in capsules so that we increase its amount in the body.

Hyaluronic acid is a compound saccharide that ensures hydration in the skin and other tissues. It serves as a lubricant in the joints and has other properties which contribute to the proper functioning of our body (for instance, it is an anti-inflammatory component and accelerates healing). Similarly to elastin, the amount in the body decreases with age, and therefore supplementation is advisable, for instance in liquid form by means of Hyaluron N-Medical®.

Collagen contributes to skin firmness and the proper functioning of the joints. As with elastin and hyaluronic acid, the amount in the body decreases with age, but this component can be suitably supplemented as well.
